Low population (Total): 2,154,863 (2017)
Country sparsely populated with population density of 3.98p/m2
At the rate of 1.98%, the population will about 3million, in the year
2030
Overall, total electricity consumption increased by 80%, from 1,931
GWh in 2001 to 3,477 GWh in 2016.
Maximum Electricity Demand – 600MW
Botswana Power Corporation undertook a demand forecast in 2012,
which projected annual consumption of electricity to reach 6,055
GWh by 2031
Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) competed this year ( a 20 year
roadmap) recommending technologies for power generation
IRP considers CSP, PV, WIND AND Coal Bed Methane for planning
period

improve access to, and efficient use of energy resources.
BOTSWANA ENERGY REGULATORY AUTHORITY
(BERA)
Established by the BERA Act No. 13 of 2016.
the Authority’s primary mandate is to provide for economic
regulation of the sector.
2. INSTITUTIONAL SET UP
BOTSWANA POWER CORPORATION (BPC)
The Corporation was established through the Botswana Power
Corporation Act of 1970.
Its primary functions are the generation, transmission, distribution,
and supply of electricity to the nation.
BPC carries out its mandate through private sector and in certain
cases directly.
