INTRODUCTION
In this developed world of broad spectrum
antibiotics there are less morbidity and
mortality due to infectious diseases.
BUT
Life style diseases are making many serious
challenges to healthcare authorities
worldwide. From the 1940s, it became
progressively more evident that lifestyle
diseases were in the ascendancy.
What are life style diseases?
Lifestyle diseases are ailments the onset
and progress of these are primarily
concerned with lifestyle and behavior
factors such as dietary habits, physical
activities, rest, smoking, alcohol
consumption, etc.
Major Lifestyle Diseases
Cardiovascular diseases - Ischaemic heart
disease , Stroke , Peripheral arterial disease
Metabolic disorders- Obesity,
Hyperlipidaemia and Type 2 Diabetes
Chronic respiratory diseases - Chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and
Asthma are the two main types of CRDs
Cancer
Other diseases associated with smoking and
alcohol and drug abuse
Etiology
It is believed through various studies that free
radicals are taking major part of the formation of
lifestyle disorders.
Free radicals can be formed from both, endogenous
and exogenous substances due to unhealthy lifestyle.
Free radicals cause lifestyle diseases such as cancer,
cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, atherosclerosis,
hypertension, etc.
In recent years, a multitude of studies provide
comprehensive evidence that increased production
of reactive oxygen species are involved in the
development and progression of lifestyle diseases.
Characteristics of lifestyle
diseases
Complex etiology
The onset of these diseases is insidious,
they take years to develop and once
encountered do not lend themselves easily to
cure
Multiple risk factors: There are a number of
risk factors that can be divided into two
primary risk sets: modifiable behavioural risk
factors and non-modifiable risk factors, many of
which are common for a number of diseases.
Functional impairment or disability
