Thalassemia
What is thalassemia?
• It is a hereditary blood cell disorder.
• It may impair the body’s ability to carry oxygen in the blood.
• It is characterized by a low hemoglobin level and a lower number of red blood cells than
normal.
What causes thalassemia?
It is an inherited blood disease passed by genes from parents to their children.
Thalassemia is not contagious. If only one of your parents is a carrier of thalassemia, you
probably won’t have symptoms, but you’ll be a carrier of the disease. If both of your parents
are carriers of thalassemia, you have a greater chance of inheriting a more serious form of the
disease.
About 2 percent chance for each pregnancy.
