The following letters are not actually a part of the modern Spanish alphabet, but a part of the
traditional alphabet. You must be aware of their sounds when combined in these forms:

Cognates
Cognates are words that are easy to translate and recognize in English. You can apply these
formulas to many other English words to find their equivalents in Spanish:

family familia telephone teléfono
False Cognates
There are also, however, many instances where appearances are deceiving and words that look alike
are quite different in meaning (“false cognates” or “false friends”).
actual - current (NOT actual – real, exacto)
asistir - to attend (NOT to assist – ayudar (help)
la carpeta - file folder (NOT carpet - alfombra)
embarazada - pregnant (NOT embarrassed - avergonzado)
la fábrica - factory (NOT fabric - tela)
la librería - bookstore (NOT library - biblioteca)
